Volunteer Needs:

Prince George's County
We have three great projects that are in need of talented and passionate volunteers:

Project #1:
NDC's Prince George's County office is looking for an Architect to draw up plans for the Sheriff Road Village Center-a new development planned for the Chapel Oaks section of Prince George’s County. This new mixed-use facility will serve a variety of needs in the surrounding area, which includes Fairmount Heights and Cedar Heights.  The 2 acre property is owned by a Community Development Corporation run by the Meridian Hill Baptist Church.  They are actively fundraising for the project and have need of design assistance.  This is a worthwhile project which will serve many unmet needs in a blighted community.

Project #2:
NDC is also seeking a Graphic Artist to design wayfaring signage for Decatur Street in Edmonston.   This town is turning the street into a Green Street, which will incorporate bio-retention areas and enhanced landscaping.  The signage will be installed along the street to highlight the improvements being made, other ‘green’ initiatives in the Town, and various local landmarks. NDC staff can help with research and production of text, but we need a graphic designer to design the actual sign template and fit the information on that template.

Project #3:
A Team of Designers is needed to look at the feasibility of developing a Wetland Education Center next to a newly installed wetland on the Anacostia River in Prince George’s County.  This is a constructed wetland, so the team would need to include someone with civil engineering skills to look at the “As Builts” and determine what loading the site can take.  Members of the team should have knowledge of cutting edge technology in terms of energy, water and sewer and waste management, as well as experience planning for multiple uses on constrained sites.  We are looking for any combination of architects, landscape architects, and engineers - this is potentially a really high profile project which would provide an excellent portfolio piece for anyone seeking LEED accreditation.

Please contact Jan Townshend on 301-779-6010 or jtownshend@ndc-md.org if you can assist with any of these volunteer opportunities.

BALTIMORE

A landscape architect/designer with LEED experience is needed for the Waverly Commons project, located at Greenmount and 33rd Street.  NDC is working with the local community to create a comprehensive vision for the area.  The project includes the re-design of a parking lot in the center of the business district as an enhanced area for multi-uses (weekly farmer’s market and community events), inclusion of additional plantings (to reduce heat island effect and/or create rain gardens), and incorporation of and sustainable/green practices (innovative stormwater management practices, increasing pervious surfaces/reducing impervious surfaces).  You will be part of a team of NDC volunteers on this project, which begins in March.  If interested contact Irene Poulsen at ipoulsen@ndc-md.org or 410-233-9686 x105.
