Support NDC's Annual Membership
Campaign - and Help Us Meet a Challenge Grant at the
Same Time!
Many of you should have
received our Annual Membership Campaign
letter - please consider a donation this
year! Individual and corporate memberships are
important to the Neighborhood Design Center; not only do
they provide needed financial assistance but also show
funders the strong grassroots support for our work - and
that NDC is needed and valued in the
community.
If you would like
to make an online donation, visit our "How to
Donate" page and make a secure
donation through PayPal.
Most importantly,
your donation will help us raise $15,000 to
match a challenge grant of $25,000 from the
Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Foundation to support NDC's
green design and planning initiative. Simply write
"Green " on your donation card or check, or call us to
have your donation designated for the challenge.
Thank you for your
support!

NDC Feature
Project: Hampstead Hill
Academy
For the past several months, the
Neighborhood Design Center has been helping four charter
schools in Baltimore City with facilities planning to
assist them in either renovating their current buildings
or finding a new location.
This month we are featuring one of those schools
- Hampstead Hill in Southeast Baltimore.
Volunteers Craig Purcell of Matrix Settles and Mary
Purcell prepared plans and drawings for a "green"
addition that will allow the school to expand their Pre
K and Kindergarten offerings. Read More ...

NDC Receives Two Grants to Support our new
Green Design Program
In December the Neighborhood
Design Center received two grants to support our
new green design program - a $10,000 grant from the
Baltimore Community Foundation and a
$25,000 challenge grant from the Marion I. &
Henry J. Knott
Foundation (see lead
article). These grants will allow NDC to develop
educational materials and neighborhood-based green
rehab programs for communities participating in
Healthy Neighborhoods, as well as integrate green
building and sustainable practices across our other
programs. Read

adults with physical and mental challenges.

Washington Redskins and Bank of America
Adopt an NDC Project
For the past
several months NDC has assisted Prince George's County's
Habitat for Humanity in developing conceptual designs
for a new house in Fairmont Heights (pictured).
The Washington
Redskins and Bank of America
have since adopted the house, which began construction
on November 27 in the FedExField parking lot, and will
continue in Fairmont Heights. Two dedication
ceremonies are planned, one at the Redskins/Cowboys game
on December 30 and another at the Habitat House when
construction is complete.

NDC Assistance leads to
Community Design Competition
In 2006,
the Neighborhood Design Center worked with the Port
Towns CDC to create conceptual designs for the
redevelopment of two blocks in Colmar Manor along
Bladensburg Road/MD202 and the Anacostia River. As
a result of our work, Port Towns CDC was able
to secure funding to move the project into the next
phase of development - the "People's Harbor
Project Competition." Winners of the
competition were announced this month. To
read about this project, and see a the winning entries,
visit www.porttowns.org.
Thanks to NDC
volunteers Scott Walters (CSD
Architects) and Stefanie McKenzie
(Read & Company Architects) for their initial
work in helping community members, civic
leaders, and developers see the potential in Colmar
Manor.
