Engine Company #14 (right) is the oldest functioning fire station in the City.  Housing thirty-two firefighters and paramedics, the station was built in 1888 and hasn’t had a major renovation since 1902. Located in an old part of West Baltimore, its service area has an overwhelming need for fire and emergency services.  Even before the economic catastrophe of 2008, firehouse personnel recognized that the survival of this station might require assistance through private or foundation funding.  But they needed a plan illustrating the necessary upgrades and renovation concepts
.

Trey Shamer of Sanders Designs, Jay Ranaweera of HDR CUH2A, and Apar Narasimhan (formerly of CSD, who now resides in India) worked on the project.  The volunteer architects substantiated necessary safety changes that station personnel have brought to attention for years (improved alarm and communication system, and efficient and reliable heat, air conditioning and lighting).  The package also recommended interior design alterations that will greatly improve the living and sleeping environment where fire and emergency medical staff spend so much time, including providing separate restrooms and showers for female staff.  Stan Lewicki, CPE, of Lewicki Estimating Services, Inc., provided cost estimates that will further assist the client in fundraising and phasing decisions.
