Cottage City Commercial Development

In 2003, the Port Towns Community Development
Corporation (PTCDC)
approached NDC. They wanted to
redevelop two blocks of Bladensburg Road in
Cottage City. This part of the commercial strip had been residential bungalows but was now zoned CSC (Commercial Shopping Center). The
CDC wanted to find a way to preserve the architectural integrity of the buildings but make the strip look more commercial with an attractive pedestrian friendly environment. NDC volunteer Qiaojue Yu from EDSA in Columbia produced some very fine concepts for the redevelopment of this area. The plans successfully tied the buildings together to make them more uniform in appearance, but cleverly integrated parking areas with access to the individual businesses. She created an attractive urban plaza to the front of
the stores with impressive signage and landscaping.
The Town government and the Port Towns CDC are actively seeking funding to make this project a reality.
